But, several centuries ago, Venice was an independent state that reigned as the leading maritime power in the Christian world. Her historic coinage, dating from the Middle Ages, set the standard for coins for the next 700 years and were among the most widely accepted form of currency in the Mediterranean region. This silver Grosso coin, which features the image of Christ on one side and the Doge, or Duke of Venice and Saint Mark on the other, was introduced by Doge Enrico Dandolo (1192-1205). Dandolo is most famous for hijacking the famous 4th crusade, which at the time of his reign, was being outfitted in Venice and planning to free the Holy Land from the Saracens.
